Happy Halloween!

Halloween is a great excuse to get silly with your kids and have lots of fun as a family!! Colorful faces, crazy costumes, a gloomy atmosphere, and lots of laughter. And, of course – lots of candy! This a perfect opportunity for kids to express themselves freely. Whether it’s a scary monster, a witch, or a favorite cartoon character, the costume your child chooses allows them to be free with their imagination and their authentic selves.

We live in a divided society where our human rights and freedoms are now being threatened. Let this Halloween be an excellent opportunity to show our children what acceptance and equality are in practice.
Letting your baby boy dress as Elsa ( or any other feminine character) and your daughter as a Fire Fighter ( or any other masculine character) doesn’t change who your child is and only makes them happy.
My opinion might not be prevalent here – and to be honest, I would disagree with it even a few years back.
Our social norms for masculinity and feminity and our freedom to wear what we want don’t always go hand in hand. It’s about time we changed that – and we need to start by looking in the mirror.
As a woman living in NYC – I can wear anything I choose. For a very long time, that wasn’t possible – same as voting was not allowed for women, wearing pants wasn’t either. Now I wear pants pretty much every day. That does not make me a man or even more masculine. The same as wearing a dress or skirt does not make a boy turn into a girl. Clothing can help us express who we are or what we feel – but it’s just that, clothing. Whatever we choose or do not choose to wear something – it doesn’t hurt anyone ( unless you are using freedom of speech to be a garbage human that enjoys discriminating against other people). So – LETT YOUR CHILD BE WHO THEY WANT TO BE!

Here is a link to a lovely little cartoon titled My Shadow is Pink, which beautifully illustrates this topic. Give it a watch! This short animation is based on a book of the same title by Scott Stuart.

Here is some practical info for today for those still looking for places to go, quick last-minute costume ideas, or how to do safe makeup for your kiddo.

It’s always better to rent the costume (better for the planet and your wallet), but if you can’t, involve the kids themselves in the making one, as it will certainly be much more fun!  Here you can see a quick tutorial on kid-safe makeup.

If you’re still looking for places to go with the whole family check out what we found!
